The schools of the future will have to be designed under a new point of view: rather then just considering criteria of sustain-ability, they will have to embrace the ability-to-sustain the new condition where the pandemic put the entire society in. The Tree-House School is a modular educational center that can include all the phases of the educational process: Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary schools. All the required spaces are fitted into two rings: the massing articulation allows to create two courtyards and an additional usable roof. The classrooms are located in circle and have connections to the courtyards and the outdoor landscape. Each module, of 55 sqm, is made of cross laminated timber and corresponds to an ideal classroom of 20/25 students connected by a central corridor. The building is designed as a ‘tree-house’ and it is distributed through multiple levels, where also roofs are usable and where indoor and outdoor spaces are combined allowing high flexibility for educational activities. The main idea is to create a school that is suspended and immerse in the nature, as a tree house, where the relationship with nature is physically and visibly increased. This is possible thanks to the faceted façade, made by the alternation of solid timber panels and glazing panels. The circular perimeter allows to block the direct sunlight with the opaque panels, and get diffuse light and free view through the transparent ones. The modularity of the design allows for future school extension, different programs, different number of classrooms and also can be adapted to create different functions, such as temporary medical centers for emergencies or temporary residential units. The school of the future has to be sustainable and, in the same time, able to sustain the new post-covid requirements. It has to be outdoor spaces inclusive and open to nature, made of natural materials and low-cost construction techniques, as modular design. It has to be highly flexible and an able to be adapted to different functions and programs, and provide several benefits to the whole community, becoming the incipit for the requalification of peripheral urban areas. The Cacao Ecovillage will be built in Pedernales, a county in the coastal province of Manabi, Ecuador, where the cacao farmers and families work and live. Construction will begin in 2022.&nbsp; This beachside destination - by the middle of the world - is known for its unspoiled panoramic beaches with great year-long weather, archeology, folklore, and an outstanding culinary tradition. &nbsp; ''We have pushed the circular economy core principles so much that they informed the design philosophy of the entire project. The cacao waste, result of the chocolate production process, will be re-utilized for 3d-printing parts of the village. Waste is not only turned into a resource, but into architecture.&nbsp; In the not-too-distant future, we will be able to design buildings entirely made of natural materials and recycle them at the end of their life cycle in order either to create new ones, or to return them back to nature''. &nbsp; (Valentino Gareri) The sustainable architectural design behind Cacao Eco Village incorporates five core principles: &nbsp; - Modular: extendable, replicable and adaptable to different sites, dimensions and geometries. - Functional: the village will operate as a cacao processing, chocolate factory, educational and research center, co-living, co-working and cultural reference point to the local community and a conscious tourism destination. - Sustainable: Energy self-sufficient village (rainwater collection and solar energy, natural ventilation and built from local materials such as bamboo, timber, and 3D printed structures made of cacao shell waste biofilaments). - Tech enabled: using blockchain, IOT, and NFTs. - Connected: to the local community and traditions. All the buildings are made of local and natural materials. The facades draw inspiration from the wide range of multi-colored Ecuadorian houses and from the cacao trees colorful fruits. The form of the buildings facilitates the rain water collection: the water tanks are integrated in the roofs, whose shape draws inspiration from the local Ecuadorian art patterns. The Village is provided with a dense network of cycle-pedestrian boulevards, and the use of electric vehicles is highly encouraged with the presence of electric charging stations, while the cars and trucks transits are limited only around the Factory and Production area.&nbsp; This new asset class of sustainable and smart infrastructure emerges as a solution for the environmental and social impact of the cacao industry, using a circular economy model as a creative solution for reducing environmental footprint, generating increased income, reducing resource dependency and minimizing waste. &nbsp; MUZE Cacao's mission is to create new ethical cacao-based products using the most out of the fruit (~80% is currently wasted). The exodus from big cites to small towns and rural areas highlights the necessity of re-thinking about the requalification of these areas and defining a new model of city for the post-pandemic future. ‘Sunflower’ is a residential village of 19 homes designed to provide a new model of sustainable community village, thought for low density and rural areas. Like a sunflower, the arrangement of the houses ‘follows’ the sun circle, where the lots and houses are radially distributed around a central communal area. Photovoltaic roofs are shaped and angled in order to receive clean energy from the sun, as a sunflower does in nature every day. PV panels are allocated only on the roofs which have the best exposure to the sun, the energy accumulated is shared with the whole village, and the facades are treated in order to achieve the best performance according to the solar orientation. The circular urban configuration represents a more sustainable way of connecting the dwellings, by reducing the amounts of necessary roads and the dependency from cars. The combination of more villages forms a new multi-centric urban configuration and a new model of city of the future, characterized by a strong sense of community.&nbsp;The city of the future should be imagined as a new Garden City 2.0, that promotes a return to nature, reduces the need of cars and facilitates the sense of living together. The classrooms are modules of 44m2 and contain storage to allow a flexible use of the space, replacing desks with beds or providing an empty room for flexible activities. Corridors are flexible spaces that can be used for extra activities, and the internal courtyard can be used as an extension of the didactic spaces. The school is surrounded by modular elements with a triangular geometry. They have structural function and provide support for the roof. Each element contains a planter-box where vegetation can grow and, through wire trellis, spread out on top of the roof providing a sustainable sunshade and reducing the building heating. Photovoltaic and solar panels can be installed on top of each triangular module. These elements work also as rain-water collectors. Under each planter-box there is 1m3 water tank (traditional local tanks can be used). The rain-water can be reused for the vegetation irrigation and for the pre-school needs (toilets and kitchen). The triangular shape is the best to provide these functions and sunshade protection while still allowing daylight to come into the classrooms. It also draws inspiration from the local art patterns and vernacular architecture. The modular nature of the proposal allows for future school extensions by adding one or more modules. Moreover each module is a&nbsp;prototype of a sustainable and self-energy efficient component which can be adopted also for different functions, such as medical centers, workshops and temporary accommodations for teachers and doctors. In our planning model, each village houses a diverse community of up to 200 people and will integrate affordable co-working and co-living spaces with water and energy micro-grids and a regenerative agricultural system.” “We are envisioning a new way of living where people can experience a closer relationship with nature and the food they eat, building a strong sense of community in the process. At the same time, we are looking to incorporate technologies in innovative ways to improve our lives and reduce the cost of living. For decades the common belief was that living in a sustainable village meant renouncing comforts. With the ‘Spiral Village’ and PolisPlan’s Circular Economy Village concept and design principles, we are reimagining the future of living where nature, sustainable energy sources and modern technologies are combined to shape the village of our dreams.”&nbsp; (Valentino Gareri) The proposed ‘Spiral Village’ will be the first example of this new, replicable model of mixed-use development that aims to move from the traditional urban sprawl to a nature-inspired arrangement of buildings and functions. It has been developed to stimulate further discussion with relevant stakeholders and to gauge support for such developments. The current concept plan for the pilot Circular Economy Village has been developed for a site with an area of 40 hectares and is inspired by the natural shape of the nautilus. It provides for eight residential hamlets that are clustered with increasing density towards the centre of the spiral. The lines of the spiral act as the roads and pathways providing for movement within the village. The residential hamlets, which will also incorporate co-working and entertainment spaces, are designed to accommodate between 20 and 30 people in separate households connected by a common roof structure. The intimate internal courtyard enjoys framed views of the surrounding rural landscape. The vision is to construct the buildings using materials from the site with emerging 3D printing methods. The overall building geometry creates and reinforces the sense of community, while the roof also has an important function in terms of harvesting energy and rainfall. The circular roof design and slope maximises capture of sunlight throughout the day, while its large size provides covered outdoor spaces, while maximising rainwater collection. The village water system is designed by creating a chain of ponds along a gully that feeds into a nearby river. The lowest pond will be a constructed wetland, designed to clean the water used on site, some of which will then be pumped to the topmost reservoir and cycled through the site again. Reservoirs will have multiple functions in addition to storing water and energy, offering opportunities for recreational swimming and aquaculture. Speech therapy aims to bring back the bridge of communication to people who have recently lost it. It can also be used to help children with delayed speech, thus building that crucial connection for them. Music therapy is a research based allied health profession in which music is used to actively support people as they aim to improve their health, functioning and well being. Sustainability was a major consideration when designing the clinic. The use of natural materials, in particular timber, was a central element of the design. Timber is a renewable resource that reduces the clinic's carbon footprint while providing a warm and welcoming environment for patients. The timber walls, combined with soft lighting, create a warm and homely atmosphere that makes patients feel comfortable and relaxed. 'Patient experience is a crucial aspect of the design, with a focus on creating a welcoming, relaxing and 'worry free' environment. We wanted to move away from the traditional concept of healthcare design and imagine the new clinic like a family house, a comfortable and stress-free environment that prioritizes the patient's well-being'. (Valentino Gareri). The waiting room, envisioned as a cozy living room, helps to reduce the stress and anxiety that patients may feel before their appointment. The space encourages a sense of community and comfort, making it easier for patients to talk to each other and share their experiences. One of the most striking features of the clinic's design is the curved timber wall that runs throughout the music therapy room. The geometry of the cladding provides a functional opportunity to add into the interior spaces lighting and greenery. This adds a visual connection to nature that helps to create a calming and relaxing environment for patients. The importance of adding greenery to healthcare spaces has become increasingly apparent in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Studies have shown that exposure to nature and natural elements, such as plants, can have a positive impact on mental and physical health, including reducing stress and anxiety levels. Green improves patient well-being while also contributing to the overall sustainable and holistic approach to healthcare. The sustainable and low-cost design approach (the cost/m2 is below the Australian average) is an essential aspect of the project that prioritizes both patient well-being and cost-effectiveness. 'By using natural materials, maximizing natural lighting and incorporating greenery into the design, this project demonstrates that sustainable design not only improves the quality of the internal spaces, but it can also be affordable and practical'. The building replaces the existing two nursery schools that have been damaged by the earthquake in 2012 and hosts up to 120 children, aged 0 to 3 years. The building, shaped by a sequence of modular cross laminated timber portal frames, aims to promote children’s interaction with the surrounding space through an educational vision where everything – from the distribution of the classrooms to the selection of the construction materials and the integration between interiors and exteriors – is planned down to the finest detail. The building, located on the Kangaroo Point Peninsula, is inspired by the local Kangaroo Point Cliff faceted form. The site is located on top of the Cliff and between two existing developments that obstruct the main view. The articulated and faceted massing provides all the apartments a stunning prime view on the City Skyline and River.
